Throughout 2018 the picture has
got better and better for the Liberal
Democrats. As our national poll
rating has crept up, so too has the
share of the vote we take at a local
In fact, in 2018 we are the only
party to have made net gains.
After the 189 byelections fought by
October 12th, we are 19 seats
better off. In contrast, Labour were
down by 2, the Tories down by 13,
UKIP by 7 and the others were all
square. You don't have to be a
numbers person to recognise what
an absolute success this year has
been for Lib Dems in local byelections.
Our most spectacular gains were in
wards where we didn't even field a
candidate last time.
We gained 57% of the vote in
Whittlewood in South
Northamptonshire in June, 67% in
Watton-at-Stone in East
Hertfordshire in August and a
whopping 74% in Southwold and
Reydon in Waveney in July.
