Sometimes it feels like every

Friday is Christmas day! Who

can resist getting up early to find

out which council seats the party

has gained the night before?

Throughout 2018 the picture has

got better and better for the Liberal

Democrats. As our national poll

rating has crept up, so too has the

share of the vote we take at a local

level.

In fact, in 2018 we are the only

party to have made net gains.

After the 189 byelections fought by

October 12th, we are 19 seats

better off. In contrast, Labour were

down by 2, the Tories down by 13,

UKIP by 7 and the others were all

square. You don't have to be a

numbers person to recognise what

an absolute success this year has

been for Lib Dems in local byelections.

Our most spectacular gains were in

wards where we didn't even field a

candidate last time.

We gained 57% of the vote in

Whittlewood in South

Northamptonshire in June, 67% in

Watton-at-Stone in East

Hertfordshire in August and a

whopping 74% in Southwold and

Reydon in Waveney in July.
