L
ike the two years above them, the
Under 14s lost just the single
game, away to Blundell's. Things
started superbly with a 17-5 win away at
Canford. Louis Smith scored just before
half-time, and the second half saw Jevon
Garbutt and Sam Sprague add to the
scoreline.
We were very much on the back foot for
the first ten minutes against Clifton, but
showed real guts and determination to get
back into the game. Skipper Jack West
was inspirational in attack, and Seb
Manger had a huge game in defence, as
tries came for Jack West, Harry Magill and
Jack Gunningham in the 19-10 win.
After a comfortable win against
Wellington, it was disappointing that we
didn't manage to make life harder for
Blundell's, but the loss of Harry Magill
after half-time didn't help. However,
George Williams played well in the pack,
and in the backs Jevon Garbutt and
Charlie Brain showed spirit.
After conceding two converted tries in five
minutes against Cheltenham, we showed
real determination to pull things back.
Good work by Henry Jeans, Duncan
McLeod and George Williams in the pack,
and by Jack Gunningham and Louis Smith
in the backs, produced two tries for Jack
West.
Under pressure in the first quarter at
Bristol Grammar School, Luke Tomkins
picked up a loose ball to sprint 60 metres
and score, after which the floodgates
opened. Despite being out-rucked by
Monmouth, we took the lead before halftime
through George Williams. Heroic
defending in the second half and individual
magic from Jack West and Jevon Garbutt
helped us to a magnificent 21-0 win.
Open 15-man rugby produced tries from
all areas of the pitch at Queen's, principally
for Henry Cole, Jack Gunningham and Luke
Tomkins - Jevon Garbutt finished off an
outstanding team try that saw the ball pass
through ten pairs of hands!
After keeping our composure to beat
Taunton School comfortably in the end
29-5, we won our final match against
Exeter School in style against determined
and physical opposition. In a perfect end
to the season, Jack West caught Will
Knill's beautifully weighted cross-field kick
to score under the posts on the final
whistle!
A
gainst Canford, the Bs missed too
many tackles, but there were signs
of the team's true potential,
especially in the two excellent tries scored
by Charlie Brain and Bradley Matthews.
The Clifton game was something of a
mis-match, but the tackling was greatly
improved - notable performances here by
Alastair Day, Ollie Guess and Seb Fender.
Down by ten points at half-time at
Wellington, we fought back well to register
our first win of the season. Alastair Day,
Bradley Matthews and Jack Samuel were
the stand-out players. We then went on to
face a huge and powerful Blundell's side,
but a spirited performance held the
opposition to 10-0 at half-time, with Anson
Lau, Ben Wagstaff and Bradley Matthews
particularly catching the eye.
Against Cheltenham we produced our best
rugby of the season against strong
opposition. Louis Wood played well at flyhalf,
ably supported by Seb Fender, Brad
Matthews and Charlie Parkin, while Alastair
Day was the pick of the pack.
The Bristol Grammar School fixture was
ruined by injury, and against Monmouth we
found ourselves outgunned rather by large
and well-organised opposition. But it was
a scintillating performance at Queen's,
with Bradley Matthews scoring five tries.
There were some bone-crunching tackles
from Alastair Day and Henry Biggs!
It was then another comprehensive win
against Taunton School, silky running
leading to the final 31-5 scoreline, before
a disappointing end to the season, losing
a match against Exeter School we could
have won, which rather took the edge off
a season in which we made great
progress.
