SKILLS INITIATIVE

TO HELP UK

MANUFACTURING

GTMA, in association with the Advanced Manufacturing

Resource Centre (AMRC) in Sheffield, is driving an initiative to

add to the engineering skills base in the UK.

The AMRC with Boeing is part of the UK's High Value Manufacturing

Catapult, a consortium of seven established manufacturing and

process research centres, backed by the Technology Strategy

Board.

These include the Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research

Centre which focuses on large scale machining and joining for the

energy sector.

GTMA's skills initiative is part of a wider commitment to making

engineering a more attractive career path for the young. "We need

100,000 engineering graduates a year and 60,000 apprentices to

keep pace with the UK's existing requirements from now and until

2020," says CEO Julia Moore. "So our failure to entice young people

into the industry is potentially an issue for the UK."

In association with the AMRC, a training programme is underway for

CNC operators in Milling and Turning at the AMRC and at the

GTMA's Manufacturing Resource Centre in Warwickshire for beginners, intermediate

and advanced students. GTMA also works with

its members and other organisations to review NVQ3 with SEMTA

for Toolmakers.
