of the UK's seabed out to the

12 nautical mile limit, plays a

the UK's offshore renewable

energy and marine minerals

industries. Its energy programme

natural gas storage; wave and

tidal; and research projects on

CROWN ESTATE -

OFFSHORE WIND

Among other activities, the

Crown Estate is investing over

£100 million alongside some of

the world's largest energy companies to

help drive the UK's

emerging offshore renewable

energy industry. In consultation

with key national stakeholders it

uses its marine asset planning

expertise to designate offshore

wind zones and, following a tender process,

grants Zone

Development Agreements

(ZDAs) to successful bidders.

The ZDAs grant exclusive rights

for development organisations to

develop offshore wind farms

within a specified zone. It has

set up five strategic workstreams

with developers and

stakeholders to overcome challenges in five key

areas including

supply chain and skills. It issues

CROWN ESTATE -

WAVE AND TIDAL

Building on its experience in offshore

wind energy and in

response to increasing market

interest, the Crown Estate has

leased a number of areas of

seabed for wave and tidal projects. It actively supports development

of these projects

including investing in first arrays.

In July 2014 it announced

agreements for six new wave

and tidal current demonstration

zones, which for the first time

will enable locally-based organisations to

manage and sub-let

parts of the seabed to a range

of wave and tidal stream developers. It also confirmed plans to

run a leasing process for projects that capture

tidal range

energy.

CROWN ESTATE -

CARBON CAPTURE

AND STORAGE

The Crown Estate is working

with developers to identify how

carbon storage beneath the

seabed can help the UK meet

its targets on carbon emissions.

Under the 2008 Energy Act, the

Crown Estate holds the rights

for carbon dioxide (CO2) storage

within the Gas Importation and

Storage Zone (GISZ), which

extends out to the continental

shelf.

During the last year, it signed

the UK's first two Agreements

for Lease for the permanent

geological storage of CO2, representing

a major milestone for

plans to build a demonstration

project in the UK.

ONSHORE RENEWABLES

The Crown Estate is looking at

onshore wind schemes in partnership with recognised

developers and also actively welcomes

participation by its tenants

in joint ventures.

The main

onshore focus is on Farm scale

projects and Micro-generation at

commercial / business and residential levels.

ENERGY RESEARCH

The Crown Estate invests in

energy research projects in

areas including:

Underwater noise; Sustainability

issues in the supply chain; and

Interactions of wildlife with tidal

turbines. A major mechanism in

its funding of energy research is

its Research Network, which

includes universities such as St

Andrews, Swansea and Durham

(with more to come). The

Network is expected to diversify

the specialist areas it works in.

CO2 STORED

The Crown Estate and the

British Geological Survey are

developing this website to give

access to world leading

information on carbon dioxide

(CO2) storage data around the

UK continental shelf, and has

information on 500 potential

CO2 storage sites around offshore

UK.

OFFSHORE WIND

ACCELERATOR

OWA is The Carbon Trust's flagship collaborative

R&D programme

to reduce the cost of

offshore wind. It is a joint industry

project, involving nine offshore

wind developers which

have about 70 per cent of the

UK's licensed capacity, and

achieves cost reduction through

innovation.

Technology challenges are identified and prioritised by the OWA

members based on the likely

savings and the potential for the

OWA to influence the outcomes.

The most promising concepts

are developed, de-risked and

commercialised as the OWA

works closely with the supply

chain throughout the process.

The OWA model uses the
