thus, the test apparatus has to

be compact.

The test focused on the measured

strains adjacent to the weld

and then loading to the required

strain under bending conditions

as distinct from the conventional

approach of using uniaxial test

data. This approach was supported

by finite element analysis.



The NMO is an Executive

Agency of the Department for

Business, Innovation and Skills

(BIS) and is responsible for stimulating good measurement

practice in the UK. It is responsible

for areas including: the infrastructure

and research programmes

of the National

Measurement System (NMS);

providing policy support to ministers

about measurement

issues; and providing technical,

legal and commercial certification services

to support manufacturers

and local authorities.

NMO is a designated measurement institute

in its own right,

providing a range of statutory

and commercial certification

services that meet the needs of

businesses and Local

Authorities. A priority is to work

within Europe and more widely

to enable manufacturers to have

access to worldwide markets.


The NMO runs programme

working groups of individuals

with an active interest in the

development of their business or

market sector. They advice on

the objectives, NMS programmes

including: innovation R&D;

acoustic and ionising radiation

programme; engineering programme;

flow programme;

materials and modelling programme.

The NMS is an executive agency

of the Department for Business,

Innovation and Skills (BIS) and

provides the UK with an infrastructure

of laboratories that

deliver world class measurement

science and technology. The

NMS is delivered through the

NMO (see above) and operates

various programmes. These

include Knowledge base programmes

which provide core

support for the development

and maintenance of the

International systems of Units

(SI) system, including re-definition of the SI units. Their ongoing


deals with national

challenges facing the UK, such

as Energy, Growth, Health,

Digital and Sustainability.


The Technology Strategy Board

runs the Sensors &

Instrumentation Group which

has over 4000 individual members from,

among others, SME

technology companies, endusers, academics, entrepreneurs,

engineering and manufacturing.

It is a central

point of

access for sensing information

and benefits include early notice

of funding opportunities and an

extensive activity programme

including workshops on issues

such as forming alliances of

micro-SMEs to address supply

chain issues.




Narec is working with the

University of Warwick as part of a

Knowledge Transfer Partnership

(KTP) to develop condition monitoring

techniques for power electronic

offshore renewable energy

applications that can be used in

operations and maintenance

processes to improve operational

reliability. The project combines

Narec's in-house condition monitoring

expertise with the power

electronics expertise held at the

University of Warwick. The result

will be cutting-edge knowledge in

the field of power electronics

condition monitoring which is not

readily available in the marketplace.

Narec has also been awarded a

KTP project with Newcastle

University to develop cost effective and feasible condition monitoring

techniques optimised for

wind and tidal turbine nacelle

systems, particularly drive train

and DC-link capacitors. The

project started in May 2014 and

runs for three years.



The European Association of

National Metrology Institutes

(EURAMET) is a Regional

Metrology Organisation (RMO) of

Europe. It coordinates the cooperation

of National Metrology

Institutes (NMI) of Europe in

fields like research in metrology.

EURAMET is responsible for the

elaboration and execution of the

European Metrology Research
