the qualification type this could be face-toface, distance learning, blended learning or

e-learning. After this course of learning, you

would be assessed. This assessment should

either be through an invigilated assessment

paper or the submission of a portfolio of

evidence, which is then independently

moderated. If you have not been assessed

through one of these methods, then your

qualification is not accredited.

Now, what many suppliers offer are

accredited 'programmes'. With an accredited

programme the training materials have been

reviewed and signed off by a competent party

as being sufficient for the course a person is

studying. Here the value of the course is

directly linked to the credibility of the

approving organisation and the process the

individual goes through to gain accreditation.

This is the jump some unscrupulous suppliers

want to make, they are giving you this type of

accreditation, but they want you to think it is

the first I mentioned (where a regulated

qualification is achieved). Just like the

example with my bacon.

So how do you make sure you are getting the

right training for you? There are a few simple

questions you can ask:

• does this give my learners a regulated

• with which awarding organisation?

• how is the exam invigilated or moderated?

What are the new dangers?

Online invigilation has been on the horizon for

a few years now, and will no doubt have a

huge impact in the years to come. There are

two ways of achieving this:

1. Online proctoring - This is the more

credible of the two options. With online

proctoring the candidate's computer would

have features that restrict access to the

internet/applications, and webcams and

microphones would be used to ensure that

coaching is not taking place. Using this

model, the candidate is monitored in real time

from a monitoring station in a separate area.

All of this happens in real time and the

invigilator can 'interact' with the candidate

should suspicions be raised.

This approach allows for issues to be dealt

with at the time of the assessment, in the

same way as would be done with a traditional
