What makes a learning

system truly responsive?

A crucial part of learning design, as all

L&D professionals are acutely aware, is

trying to create courses that look good

enough to spark curiosity and

engagement. Even when the material has

high value in learners' everyday work and

careers, non-functional, drab design

deters from the message and diminishes

belief in the worth of your e-learning.

The challenge of changing

layouts

One of the culprits for this disengagement is

static design. This is when a webpage sticks

at one width and remains unchanged

regardless of the size of the browser window,

making everything appear tiny on a mobile

device. You've also probably encountered

fluid design in which the elements of the page

are set to certain percentage widths. The

content therefore adapts somewhat to the

size of the screen but still ends up crushed

and difficult to read on small screens.

The solution to these challenges is adaptive

and responsive design, functionality that is

not offered by all authoring tools. Those that

do incorporate fully responsive design across

all multi-device courses.

Adaptive design combines static and fluid

layouts as well as reduced browser size. This

means that it will switch from three to two

columns, for example, and scale the font size

accordingly.

Stylish on any device

Responsive design is created when fluid and

adaptive capabilities are mixed. Before the

elements of a page get too compressed, a

responsive design will switch, changing

elements including the column widths,

number of columns and font size, based on

the width of the viewpoint.

With responsive design, you can change the

size of the browser to the width of the thinnest

smartphone, and your layout will re-arrange

itself so that the text remains the same size

without affecting the intuitive qualities of your

course.
