E-learning technology trends:

the 2019 reality

Traditionally, any overview of the learning

technology market will be packed full of

bleeding edge tools that will most likely STILL

be emerging this time next year. So, let's get

real. Here are 12 key takeaways from the best

current research in the workplace learning

tech community, to help you cut through the

hype:

1: Complexity

The learning technology market keeps on

branching and expanding. There have been

significant mergers and acquisitions among

the larger players. However, there are also

more niche vendors coming online than ever

before, geared towards specific challenges

and integrating seamlessly with existing

systems.

The big message from the analysts:

increasing choice presents great

opportunities, but you need to understand

and manage risks, during selection and

implementation. Consult and buy smart!

2: Learning management redux

Niche vendors are supplying platforms to

complement your LMS - not replace it -

offering enhancements in performance

support, knowledge management, workplace

support and curated content.

Some will always trumpet its demise, but

organisational LMS usage has risen over the

past two years. L&D teams are mixing the

LMS with specialist tools into a connected

network of products. Hence terms like

'learning technology stack' and 'learning

ecosystem' are gaining ground.

If you need a new LMS choose something

modular and integration-friendly, and start

building your own learning technology

stack.

3: Anti-social behaviour

LMS buyers are demanding social features

but few are making good use of them. Good

intentions abound but organisations

commonly underestimate the time and effort

needed to shift culture and embed social

learning.

This will probably travel from the grassroots

up. Collaborative tools like Yammer or Slack

are probably already being used by your

learners. Smart teams are using agile

methods to experiment with these platforms

in order to iterate rapidly, fail fast and learn

quickly.

Get on board the social learning ship

before your learners set sail without you!
