Freelance L&D professionals

benchmark skills against the

LPI capability map

As part of their ongoing commitment to

innovation, digital learning support specialists

are choosing to align their business platform

closely with the Learning and Performance

Institute (LPI) capability map. Established in

1995 as the Institute for IT training, the LPI is

now the leading authority on workplace

learning and development.

The capability map exists to help L&D

professionals and teams to benchmark their

capabilities and gain an understanding of

where their skill gaps lie, in order to develop

and plan for future success.

The map provides a global view of the skills

needed to deliver modern workplace L&D. It

provides a framework to help learning

professionals - this may include individuals,

entire learning departments, researchers,

managers, buyers and service providers -

meet the increasingly-diverse demands of the

modern L&D environment. It can be used for a

range of purposes including personal

development and individual self-assessment,

team development and departmental

assessment and strategic planning.

Within five primary categories, the framework

covers a total of 25 skillsets necessary to

achieve success in L&D. These are grouped into

five overall categories: Strategy & Operations,

Support Learning, Design & Develop Solutions,

Facilitate Learning and Performance & impact.

The individual assessment areas were

developed by leading international experts in

their respective fields of learning, using research,

frameworks and real-world experience. These

areas were then peer-reviewed and combined

to form the LPI capability map.

This is the map's second iteration- the first was

developed in 2012, and has already assisted

many individuals and teams to identify both their

strengths and skill gaps, and to understand

what additional skillsets may be needed moving

forward. The map was refreshed in 2018 to

account for developments such as the

increased use of technology in workplace

learning, and improved understanding of how

people learn, and it will be updated again in

2021.
