THE first quarter sure came

and went quickly, didn't it?

The good news is that we

have seen a great rebound in

our economy as well as in our

industry. The NRF has reported

that they see a healthy

increase for our businesses

and that consumer confidence

is at almost unprecended

levels.

ALL of this is great news for our

independent businesses and it was

apparent to me during last month's trade

shows we participated in. Attendance was

good and we witnessed a good deal of

order writing and optimism. After all, as

small business owners that is the way we

gauge our successes.

I'VE always gotten a good barometer

of where the industry is heading after

staffing our booths at the trade shows.

Rather than trust news or articles written

by people who may be disconnected and

not in the trenches I get to speak with

actual retailers and wholesalers to get a

sense of things.

MANY of those I spoke with echo the

sentiments in this article. Things have

greatly improved and I was extra glad to

see that many retailers have taken my

advice to build or fortify their online

presence to not miss out on sales.

WITH the nicer weather

slowly making its way to

all states shoppers will be

heading to do just that - shop!

And your selling spaces need

to be spruced up and reflect

the changing season to entice

them to come in and spend

money.

THIS could hopefully be

one of the best years for

independent retailers in many years.

Many of the large big box stores have

been closing and others are on the ropes,

creating an opening for our businesses to

attract new shoppers often being more

convenient in areas where stores have

closed.

OUR small businesses need to be

responsive to our clients. Unlike the

large stores we have the ability to buy

inventory on the fly, to shift merchandise

lines within days, not months. We do not

need meetings and plan-o-grams to make

changes - we just do it. And that ability is

the sure way to profitability.

MANY wholesalers have been reducing

minimum purchases on their items which

also allows us to carry a larger variety of

merchandse without tying all of our funds

up in inventory. Take advantage of that

great buying opportunity from our many

advertisers in this issue.

This is a great time of the year

when hope springs eternal

in the retailing indusry. Where we hope the showers of

April will be coins and bills falling into our cash registers!
