FORUM WORKSHOP

continued...

Some signs should greet customers right at

the door, so there can be no mistake about

your policy. "Break it and you buy it" is one

warning many retailers who sell fragile merchandise

use as a friendly reminder for customers to be careful

handling the products.

When theft is a concern, a sign inside the entrance

should inform shoppers how you intend

to deal with it. A little humor doesn't hurt in

such a sensitive area. For instance, there's one

popular sign that, rather than saying, "All

Shoplifters Will Be Prosecuted," says "All

Shoplifters Will Be Eaten." Just the sign is

enough to deter some potential

thieves. Some retailers minimize the

temptation by having

customers check bags and packages

at the front, upon entering.

These security issues pose a touchy area in customer

relations. You want to watch your customers,

yet you don't want them to realize

they're being watched and feel uncomfortable.

Regardless, when you strongly suspect someone intends

to lift merchandise or is doing so,

follow him through the store. Don't accuse anyone

until he's exited the store: Until someone

leaves the premises with concealed merchandise, he

can claim he intended to pay for it. It's

your responsibility to instruct employees how

to deal with shoplifters. Failure to do so raises

the possibility you could one day find yourself

on the wrong end of a lawsuit.

Certain store policies need to be posted

right near the cash register, where they

won't escape notice by your shoppers.
