Dorothy and Robert DeBolt, parents of 20 children
- 14 adopted and multihandicapped -
have risen to international prominence as a top
husband-wife speaking team, humanitarians,
miracle workers, and pioneers in their fields of
endeavor. They've received commendations
from 3 presidents, and Dorothy is one of the
few women to have received the nation's highest
speaking award from the National Speakers
Association. Millions have seen their Academy
Award-winning film, Who Are the Debolts? or
read their book, 19 Steps up the Mountain - The
Story of the DeBolt Family. Their notoriety all
began because Dorothy made media friends.
When she and her first husband, Ted Atwood,
adopted 2 Korean-Caucasian orphans in the
50s, it was the first such happening in their
small town of Placerville, California. Taking full
advantage of press and media interest in their
human-interest story, Dorothy welcomed all interviews
and furnished some of her own stories
and letters to editors.
Later, when Dorothy
formed her growing
family into the Atwood
Family Singers, she
used her media contacts
to help find fame
through regular appearances
on local television
and even a
national appearance on
the "Tennessee Ernie
Ford Show." From her small foothills town, she
fed items to San Francisco's esteemed columnist, Herb Caen.
