RETAIL numbers are rising

in many segments, with the

biggest bump in online sales.

And now the final month of

our holiday push at our stores.

It all seemed to fly by just after

back-to-school.

WITH a record low of

unemployed people there

will be more shoppers in

the market for holiday gifts.

There are slightly higher wages that may

have some effect on spending, but the

largest effect will be the confidence that

the stock market gains has brought to

investors and working people's retirement

accounts.

THE outlook is looking very good for

those who stay on the cutting edge of

their businesses. It is crucial that you buy

smart for your business. Make sure that

you are careful about following trends and

consumer desires. Oftentimes buyers for

stores let their personal tastes get in the

way of their purchases. Look, I may not like

retro 1970's fashions, but if the trend is

for that rest assured my store will carry it.

Watch the trends and watch them again,

because they change faster than time

these days.

WE are now in the final countdown that

is the culmination of all the hard work

and efforts that each of us has invested

in their businesses. Even the

most seasoned retailer cannot

help but be excited by the

season.

NOW is the time to make

your last minute push. Extend

your store hours, increase

your marketing and special

promotions to bring in those

last minute shoppers.

THIS is the time to sell off

your old inventory for funds to replenish

with new items for the new year. If

something has not sold all year, mark it

down and move it out. Many shoppers

who weren't interested in it in the past

may now jump at a bargain to gift to

someone on their long list.

ONE of the best things we have done at

our stores was to create gift baskets for

every season. Christmas is the simplest.

Assemble a group of items (themes are

best) and create your own gift baskets.

This is a great way to move out slow

sellers or overstocked merchandise you

have sitting around. The baskets make

gift buying easy for shoppers looking for

something for teachers, co-workers and

the like.

MOST importantly do not forget to

enjoy your own holiday. The amount of

income you make is a direct result of your

hard conscientious work.

THEN get ready to start all over again!

What a Year

it has been, and we still

have a month left to go. An

unpredictable presidency that surprisingly brought stock market highs.
