forumworkshop

When you join a group, ask the program chairperson

for the list of upcoming topics to be covered

and the ones for which speakers are

needed. Crisis public relations was the topic

one professional organization wanted to cover.

Scheduled several months into the year, the

program chairperson hadn't even begun to contact

potential speakers when she got a call from

a well-known public relations man who had

years of experience. The man got the speaking

engagement and the visibility as someone who

can adeptly put out fires under pressure.

Informational Interviewing Techniques

We all know that people like to give advice.

That's why everyone prefers to serve on an advisory

committee - not to mention that it involves much

less work than a real committee.

Use this to your advantage. Many people who

don't have time to meet with you probably

have time to meet with a representative of their

club or organization to give advice on certain

issues. This gets you in the door. Once you are

in the door, make good use of the person's time.

And Work Hard, But Not Too Hard

Work toward becoming a leader of the group,

but avoid assignments that require maximum

work with minimum reward.
