Sometimes a line in a motion picture says it all.

For this article, the film is The Natural. Robert

Redford stars as Roy Hobbs, a baseball player

of rare ability whose life did not turn out as he

expected. In an opening scene, it is a spring day

in rural 1920s America. Roy is a school boy

growing up on the family farm, and his dad is

teaching him how to play baseball. His father

realizes, during a game of catch by the barn,

that Roy could be the greatest baseball star of

all time. The father, who expects to die soon,

wonders what to tell Roy to prepare him for the

rough journey ahead. He gives him this fatherly

advice: "You got a gift, Roy. But it's not

enough. You got to develop yourself. Rely too

much on your gift and you will fail."
