FORUM WORKSHOP

If you've already done that and found your

idea a winner, perhaps you can expand the

scope of that retail experiment. Use this setback

to your advantage and cultivate increased demand

for your products. Consider doubling the

amount of inventory you carry in the booth or

kiosk, or set up two mini-stores in different locations around

your area. The added exposure

can only broaden your customer base. If you're

truly an entrepreneur, you won't give up; you'll

turn adversity into opportunity.

On the other hand, if your experiments

brought you limited success,

and your best efforts failed to

generate the financial support to

get your business off the ground,

it's time to step back and reevaluate the store

concept.

Consider the experience of the visionary behind

Hub Central, specialist in auto hubcaps.

He recognized his business opportunity one afternoon

driving home along one of his busy

home city's neglected byways. What did he

see? A lot of potholes, a lot of cars hitting them,

and a lot losing their their hubcaps. What startup inventory

he couldn't collect from the road

shoulder, he purchased at area junk yards. He

started in an open-air market conveniently situated across

from the city's strip of auto parts

stores.

Some of his customers were the disgruntled

drivers who lost wheel covers during their

daily commute. Most, though, turned out

to be car collectors and restorers looking

for vintage caps for their vintage cars.9
