TARGET OPENING DAY

& DRAW UP A CHECKLIST

For now, your concern should be working toward

one deadline: Opening Day. Your first reference

point in setting up the schedule of

activity is the date when renovation work will

be completed and you can occupy the space.

Try to set opening day for at least a month from

that date. You can always open your doors before

the event, if things work to your advantage.

You may also push it back a little if

something slows the schedule. The important

thing right now is to set a target date, a fixed

deadline you plan to meet.

Next take your expenses list and compile a

checklist of whatever you must do in order to

acquire those goods or services. Make this as detailed a list as necessary.

You'll later experience a

tremendous sense of satisfaction

crossing completed

tasks off the list.

Sign the lease, hire the contractor, and let the

renovation work proceed. If you decide to do

the work yourself, push your opening day back

at least 2 weeks, preferably a month, immediately.

That's because you should be using the

time the premises is being readied for occupation to

handle other start-up activities. Like arranging

for telephone service. Purchasing

fixtures and displays. Developing and approving

a store logo. Ordering business signs and

business cards. Investigating and deciding on

a computer inventory management system.
