OUR first issue hit the

press in May of 1981 and was

a simple 16-page newspaper

with 5000 copies. There were

no computers, cell phones

and not even a fax machine!

Ad design was done by hand

and dinosaur sized machines

to set type, paste up

mechanicals and then make

plates and run on press. Many

steps, lots of money and people required

every month.

THIS is our 444th issue of Forum and

over the years we have never missed

a deadline regardless of anything that

was happening in our lives or the world.

Everyone here has remained dedicated to

our readers, advertisers and the industry

and we continue with the same vigor as

when I was 22-years-old with $100 and a

prayer to start this business.

OVER the years automation came to be

and production simpilified allowing us to

keep our pricing sharp and let circulation

climb. The internet started catching on

and while in the beginning was just a

speedbump to our retail store readers

and wholesalers, has now really impacted

the way business is being done.

HERE at Forum we have always tried to

embrace new technologies to make our

products better and even more accessible

to our readers. We've made

a lot of investment into our

e-magazine platform which

grows our readership each to

bring in more readers than

ever possible. The internet

can be your friend when you

harness its power to your

advantage.

IT'S all about growth for

all of our businesses. Staying

on top of trends, knowing when to zig

rather than zag makes the difference in

our longetivity in the marketplace. This is

especially true these days when so many

retailers have tough decisions to make on

their businesses. My theory is that there

will always be the need for shopping - the

delivery system is what is evolving. As

businesspeople we need to think ahead

and follow the trends. If more retailing

is being done on line then we need to

increase our presence online.

AS I flip through old issues of our

magazine from the 80's and 90's I am

grateful for the opportunity we've had

and continue to have to provide a voice

for the independent retailer. I've met

wonderful wholesalers and retailers over

the years, some still here, many gone.

Through it all it has been and continues

to be the highlight of my life!

Where does

the time go? With this issue we are

celebrating the 37th Anniversary of

Retailers Forum and the start of our 38th year servicing the industry.
