THE final quarter is the

retailers most nervous time

as we anxiously await the

start of the holiday sales

season. After coasting

through the slower months

and the summer we are now

poised to make the bulk of

our income for the year.

THIS year has certainly

been a tumultuous one.

A new president with constant

controversy surrounding him, an eratic

economy, global tensions and unrest

has certainly made for challenges

for us all. However, truth be told that

regardless of the distractions most

retailers have had a better-thanexpected

year and are optimistic for

the year end.

AFTER 37 years here at Forum, one

thing we always know is that Christmas

will come and shoppers will spend. It's

always just a question of how much

they will spend each year.

WILL there be a lot of last minute

shopping? Will our competitors start

with immediate discounting or will they

be smart and gradually lower prices as

we get closer to the holidays? These

are all things that we cannot predict

but that make a big difference to our

bottom lines this time of year.

THIS month we will see billions of

dollars being spent on

Halloween merchandise. It

is a big money holiday and

your business should cash in

if at all possible.

IF you sell gift merchandise

or novelties, adding as mall

Halloween section is easy

and can be quite profitable.

THIS is also the time

for your business to start

the lay-away plan for shoppers. And

be smart about it, make it simple

for shoppers and do not add fees to

the service so your customers will be

encouraged to use it. You will end up

selling more to each shopper.

ABOVE all make sure that your selling

spaces are festive and welcoming. I

cannot stress this enough. Our

competitors, the big chains, know how

important decor is at their stores and

they change it constantly. You may be

working on a smaller budget but you

must get your buyers into the holiday

spending mood. It will reflect on your

sales and traffic at your business.

THIS is the time we have all been

waiting for. It is time to move things up

a notch and impress the importance

of the season to your sales staff. Every

day, every hour counts so put your best

efforts forward and sell!

As we enter into the home stretch of retailing

anything is possible from now

through the end of the year. This is one of the most exciting times for retailers.
