laying teams, South opens a weak no trump.

North transfers to spades and then offers a

choice of game contracts by jumping to 3NT.

South corrects to 4´ since the eight card fit is the

normal spot. West leads a trump.

The contract looks precarious but if the queen of

diamonds is with East, your chances improve, and

in order to preserve entries to either hand in

trumps, you should win the lead in dummy and try

this at trick two. Unfortunately the diamond loses

to the queen, and a club is returned to East's jack.

How do you plan the play now?

This is where you have got to before playing from

hand on this club:

You will need a favourable lie of the club suit, so

that the defence are unable to cash them. It is

unlikely that West began with six to the king-queen

since he didn't choose to lead them at trick one, so

you are better off ducking this trick and hoping that

they are five-two. East continues with the queen

which you win. Now play your top diamond from

hand. When East wins and cannot play a club, a

trump is returned. Now you can discard a heart on

the jack of diamonds, play three rounds of hearts,

ruffing the third in dummy high to in order to cross

back to hand with a trump (drawing the last trump)

and discard your club on the master heart. This was
