June 2019 English Bridge
When Northern Ireland played N/S:
1 Possibly short, 2 Natural & forcing,
3 Showing a stopper
Some later versions of the 4-3-2-1 point count
recommend adding half a point for a ten, but on
this occasion the ®10 was worth minus 1070
aggregate points. Without it, South would have had
no choice but to make 6® by playing ®A and low to
the queen; holding the ®10, his percentage play was
®A and low to the ten since this would pick up not
only ®Jxx with East but ®KJxx also. That was what
he did, and the Welsh 'disaster' at the other table
gained them 14 IMPs. r
If you are still playing at two different bridge clubs
when you turn 100, you deserve a lot of cake!
Congratulations to Beatrice Levene (affectionately
known as Beattie) who celebrated her centenary
recently and enjoyed exceptional cakes at both
Besses o'th Barn Bridge Club in Manchester and at
Bury Athenaeum Bridge Club.
DOUBLE 100 CELEBRATION!
Fourteen bridge players from Braunschweig in
Germany arrived for the Wiltshire GP Swiss
weekend at the beginning of March, held at Bath
University. The German town is twinned with
Bath. They played together in the Swiss pairs, but
took English team mates for the Swiss teams.
Some of the players stayed with host families and
a return visit is planned for 2021.
GERMAN TWINNERS AT BATH
