T

he 2019 Lady Milne (Women's Home

International Trophy) was contested in

Dublin. England faced Wales on this deal:

East's 2™ showed a weak hand with both majors.

A 2NT overcall can stretch to a 19-count, and

Catherine Draper raised to game. Sue Ingham led

the ´7 to dummy's ´10 and East's ace. Susanna

Gross then won the ´2 return with the jack. The

®10 went to East's queen and declarer won the

spade continuation with the king.

Four rounds of diamonds came next. Gilly

Clench was down to ´Q ™J874 ®3 and had to

throw a heart to beat the contract. When she

discarded the ®3, Gross promptly cashed the ™AK

and threw East on lead with a spade. Clench then

had to lead from her ™J8, conceding a ninth trick to

dummy's ™10. Well played Gross, and the +600

gave England a swing of 13 IMPs.

Sally Brock and Gilly Cardiff stepped in for the

next encounter with Wales:

North's 2NT was an overbid, particularly when

you bear in mind that South is mathematically

twice as likely to hold 15 points as 17. Nicola Smith

made the best lead of a diamond. When declarer

won and played the ®J, West won with the king and

played another diamond. Maggie Pierce took three

more diamond tricks and played a club to the

queen, East returning a heart. Declarer scored the

™AK and exited with the ®8.

The defenders then scored the balance, collecting

+200 for two down.

Marc Smith and I, commentating on BBO,

observed that justice had been done after North's

overbid. News then reached us that England had bid

and made 3NT at the other table!
