PIANOLA: THE FUTURE OF BRIDGE

BRIDGE PLAYERS may know that the term ‘pianola’ refers to a

hand so easy that it almost plays itself.

A Leeds-based company is giving the expression a twist, how-

ever, with the launch of a new, web-based system for clubs and

players that is so simple it requires no technical skill to use.

After playing at his local club for several years, Pianola creator

James Ward came up with an idea to help players arrange

partnerships online. The concept grew over time to provide

players with in-depth information about their performance as

well as features to help club managers.

‘Pianola provides players with a personalised history of their

results and calculates their average with different partners as well

as in each of the roles of the game: declarer, defender – even

dummy(!)’, James said. ‘Pianola also displays the player’s latest

rankings from the EBU. By supplementing this data with informa-

tion about their preferred systems and experience, players can

provide rich information when they advertise in the Pianola

partner-finder.’

Club managers also benefit from the administrative features of

Pianola, which provide a powerful, yet simple-to-use member-

ship database, email groups, management reports, membership

renewals and automatic P2P uploads.

Martin Lee, Bridgemate UK Distributor describes Pianola as

‘The future of bridge.’ It is popular with players too. Colin Frazer

(Leeds Bridge Club) said: ‘Pianola is a wonderful invention. I now

know so much more about my game than I ever did before.’
