One of our residential for
homes for young adults has
secured a 'good' rating from
the Care Quality Commission
(CQC).
Charlotte House, which is based off
the main Prior's Court site in the
neighbouring village of Hermitage,
was inspected at the beginning of
March with the 'good' rating issued
in April.
The report praised Prior's Court staff
members for their knowledge and
the care they provide.
Extracts of the report read:
• "People were at the heart of the
service. The registered manager
and staff were passionate and
continuously strived to achieve
good, positive outcomes for
people."
• "People were comfortable and
felt secure in staff presence. They
sought out staff's company for
reassurance and companionship."
• "The atmosphere in the service
was warm, friendly and
welcoming. It was clear from our
observations and discussions that
there was an open and supportive
culture towards people and staff.
Staff and people spoke highly of
the management team."
As well as observing and speaking to
staff members, the CQC inspectors
also spoke to relatives of the young
adults.
The report added:
• "A relative told us they felt staff
supported their loved one to be as
independent as possible. They said
staff support them in, "Getting
food, going shopping and helping
him cook his food and they let
him pick what he wants. He helps
do the shopping. He has his own
pocket money and the staff help
him pick his treats."
• "Another relative said about
their loved one, "He goes out to
restaurants, but they are also
teaching him how to cope with
different circumstances and
different situations. Previously he
wouldn't have his feet measured
or go to a coffee shop."
Emma Mackay, the registered
manager for Charlotte House and
Prior's Court Care Manager, said:
"All we do at Charlotte House,
and at Prior's Court as a whole,
is geared towards developing the
independence of the young people
we care for to allow them to lead
rich and fulfilling lives. This makes it
extremely heartening to see how the
inspectors noted how that those in
our care are the heart of the service.
"It was also encouraging to
note the extensive praise for the
staff members which featured in
the report. Their hard work and
dedication to supporting our young
people is outstanding and they
should be proud of this report."
All of Prior's Court's residential
homes for young adults are rated as
'good' by the CQC, while all of our
residential homes for young people
aged 5 to 19 are rated as 'good' by
Ofsted.

'Good' ratings across the board
Transitioning to life after Prior's
Court can be a difficult time
for our young people and their
parents and we are determined to
make this process as smooth as
possible.
Empowering parents with information
on options and processes to help them
make the right choice for their sons and
daughters for life after Prior's Court, is a
huge part of our approach.
To help with this, earlier this year, our
Transitions Officer Ania Zielnik organised
two events for the parents of our young
people to get vital information about the
transition process.
An event held on-site at the beginning
of March was an opportunity for parents
to get practical information about
when their children leave education and
transition to the next stage of their lives,
in either further education, supported
living, residential care or living back
home. Around 45 parents attended.
Around a dozen exhibitors were onhand to provide information about their
services which included:
• Supported living
• Residential care
• Further education
• Advocacy
An event was also held in February with
a representative from supported living
provider Home From Home Care giving a
presentation detailing key steps, pieces
of legislation and processes for parents
to consider, while the 25 parents present
also shared their own experiences and
advice with one another.
