However - what would happen if you held this

trump suit?

Now the missing three trumps will break 2-1 78%

of the time, more than enough to justify playing in

a small slam, indeed you might even want to be in a

grand slam if that's all that it depended on.

The moral of the story is this:

When you know you have ten trumps between

you, you may count your side as having the queen of

trumps and bid accordingly. The full hand might be

this:

When West discovers partner has an ace he goes

straight to a small slam, knowing that at worst it will

need a 2-1 break. (If partner had the jack of trumps

then you would be able to cope with 3-0 onside as

well, now the odds rise to close to 90%)

Sometimes it will be the responder who knows of

the ten trumps and he might have to change his

response accordingly:

West opens 2NT and breaks the transfer when his

partner bids 3H showing a spade suit. With an ace

and two kings East is well justified in looking for a

slam and he bids 4NT to check on key-cards. West

should reply 5´, showing two key-cards and the

queen of trumps. East will now bid a small slam,

expecting just the one missing ace to be the loser.

West is justified in showing the queen as he

knows about the ten card fit, since his partner's

transfer bid shows five spades and he holds five

himself. Similarly if you have a 6-4 fit (or more!) it

will be right to show the queen.

The Dos and Don'ts of using RKCB

Do remember to discount the king of trumps

when answering a 5NT bid asking for kings,

as it has already been accounted for.

Do be prepared to show the queen of trumps

if you are sure you have a ten card fit

between you.

Don't bid 5NT to ask for kings without holding

all five key-cards and the queen of trumps

between the two hands.

Don't worry about missing the queen of trumps

when you have ten trumps between the

hands as it will drop often enough to

make your slam a good contract. r
