The The Reverend Stefan

surely?' said Benson. 'You don't need a solid suit in
'You think minus 1100 in 3™ doubled would be a
good idea?' demanded the Headmaster. 'Even these
undisciplined boys wouldn't open 3™.'
A few rounds later the Headmaster faced Stefan
Götel and the Matron. This was the first board they
The Headmaster beckoned for the next board to
be brought into position.
'It's not at all likely, of course,' Götel continued,
'but to beat the contract you must lead exactly the
diamond jack. This would kill my diamond entry
before I can use it.'
The Matron reached for the Headmaster's curtain
card. 'Ah, look, your diamonds were headed by the
A-J-9,' she informed him.
The Headmaster sat back wearily in his chair. Did
she think he had poor eyesight?
'The t10 was in the dummy,' continued the
Matron. 'I was reading about this only yesterday. in
Madge Warner's column. Your jack and nine of
diamonds surrounded my 10. Only a 'surround
play' can beat the contract!' r
The German master rated his hand as too strong
for a 3® response. He bid 3NT and the Headmaster
led the t7.
Götel considered the likely lie of the diamond
suit. The Rule of Eleven placed East with one card
higher than the 7. If this was the 9 or 8, dummy's 10
would win the first trick. If East's card was the tJ,
what then? If he won with the king or queen, he
would have no entry left to the blocked clubs. If
instead he ducked and the tJ was a singleton, East
would cross to the ´A, allowing West to play ace and
another diamond. 'Play the ten, please, Matron.'
When dummy's t10 won the trick, Götel
unblocked the ace and king of clubs. He then led a
another diamond to the queen and ace. The
Headmaster could do no better than to return a
diamond. Declarer won with the king and cashed
five club tricks, ending with an overtrick.
Stefan Götel turned smilingly to his left. 'Did you
spot a rather interesting point there, Headmaster?'
