Forrester's 2t took away more bidding space and

the spade game went two down, giving England 11

IMPs in a match that they won 37-20.

There was a similar choice of game contract on a

board from the women's match between England

and their great rivals, the Netherlands.

To beat this game, Tor Helness would need to lead

the tQ. It is not so impossible as you might think,

because it could gain when either dummy or South

held a singleton tJ. He chose the t2 instead and

dummy's jack won.

A club to the king was allowed to win and

Allerton cashed the ™A before playing the ®J.

When North played low again, declarer overtook

with dummy's ®Q and led the ™10, covered by the

queen and king. A third round of hearts to the 8

and jack set up declarer's ™9 but he had no entry to

his hand.

Helgemo returned a diamond (declarer would

succeed on a spade switch, since North has no

further spade to play). Allerton won with the tA

and cashed the ™9. He then played a spade to

North's ace. After winning the diamond return, he

played a spade to the queen and king. Helness was

down to the ®A and a good diamond but Helgemo

had to return a spade to dummy's jack and the

game was made. This excellent piece of dummy play

netted +400.

West's 2™, on this sequence, showed four spades

and game was reached in that suit. Dhondy led the

®K, asking for a count signal and saw the ®4

(reverse count) from partner. She continued with

the ®A, the ™A and then a third round of clubs.

Arnolds ruffed with the ´9, overruffed with the

´10, and the game was one down. This defence

would have promoted a trump trick even if North

held only ´J-10-8.

When the Stayman response was doubled,

Brock's pass denied a club stopper. Brown could

have looked for a spade fit (with a redouble, as at

the other table) but she was happy to play in 3NT.

Dekkers led the ®10, South winning dummy's

queen with the king and switching to the ™2. Brock
