put up the king and the card held. North discarded

spades when the diamond suit was run and Brock

then made +630 for a gain of 12 IMPs. England won

this match by 65-18.

West's 2´ showed diamonds and East's 3t denied

a good diamond fit. West decided to bid no further

and indeed we can see that 3NT would go down on

a heart lead. Germany collected +150 for 3t+2.

Could England do better?

Indeed they could! Muller's 3™ was a splinter-bid

raise in clubs, which showed good trumps and was

forcing to at least 4®. South led the ™Q and twelve

tricks were made when the tA was onside. No-one

else bid the slam in the Seniors' event. It was 15

IMPs to England, who won by 52-17.

Why do some players pass on that West hand?

Driessens had a 3-11 point multi available, so there

was no excuse. West led the t4 against 5™ doubled,

East winning with the tQ and playing the tA.

Brock ruffed high and played a spade, West rising

with the ace. After a club to the queen, East needed

to cash the ®A. Mistakenly, she played another

diamond straight away. This did indeed promote a

West's ™10 but Brock was able to ruff high and cross

to the ™Q to discard her last club on the ´K. That

was only two down for -300.

Draper expected her partner to hold long hearts

and decided to pass the trash multi (0-7 points).

The Belgium South now had to find a Pass to score

a good board! When she preferred to bid 4™,

Draper knew that Fawcett held long spades. She bid

4´ and subsequently 5´, doubled by North and

made with an overtrick on a heart lead. That was

+1050 and a swing of 13 IMPs to England.
