A double-dummy low heart lead would have beaten it, but

the normal ®2 did not. England scored +620.

This was a horrific board for North-South, who could

have made 6® as the cards lie. Who do you blame? The

commentators were saying 'Difficult for South. Her

partner's 1® could be on a doubleton.' Really? The EastWest

bidding sounds like a 10-card spade fit to me, which

leaves North with a void spade. In that case she must hold

at least five clubs. As I see it, South had a clear-cut bid of 5®

at her second turn.

I much prefer Heather Dhondy's 2´, when vulnerable, to

East's 1´ here. Even so, West was restrained in stopping

short of game. Again I think South should have diagnosed

that her hand contained excellent club support, once EastWest

had announced a big fit in spades.

Awards: 4´ (10), 3´ (5).

2.Game All. Dealer North The deal comes from the Greek Teams Final. West had to

guess how many hearts to bid and chose to go high. South's

Lightner Double told North to lead one of the minor suits.

North chose the ®6, which looks best, and declarer was

soon writing +1860 in his card. Perhaps South should have

bid a lead-directing 4t at his first turn.

Three rounds of diamonds would promote North's ™J

and beat the game contract when a slam had been made

with an overtrick at the other table. No, North led the ®6

and Protonotarios was disappointed to lose 12 IMPs for his

splendid +1250.

slams (2).

We start with a deal from the Lady Milne

Trophy, with England facing Scotland. Sally

Anoyrkatis made a fit-jump response of 4t

and the resultant spade game was excellent.
