CRIKEY MOSES - OVER £50,000
hen our four Junior Teams all qualified
to take part in the World Junior
Championships in China the Board
decided that it would attempt to raise funds to
cover the expenses that would be incurred (and at
the time it was difficult to work out what those
expenses would be). It wasn't to be just about the
money - it was a chance for the membership at
large to connect with the Junior Squads, and to
encourage in a tangible way those who are the
future of the game. Everybody who supported them
suddenly had a vested interest in them.
We set a target. That target was £25,000, which
would go a long way towards paying for travel,
accommodation and training. We thought the
target a bit optimistic, but a bit of optimism every
now and again doesn't go amiss.
At the time of writing, we have glided past
£50,000. Can I say that again? £50,000.
And it's not even over yet - it's not over until they

funding for youth teams doubles the target
I can't believe, a year down the line, that I'm
actually thinking about what to do with a possible
And it's all down to the members. There have
been corporate sponsors, private donations large
and small, clubs, counties, schools - this trip has
captured the imagination of so, so many. I am
hoping to thank everyone individually (I thought
I'd just have to bang out half a dozen or so e-mails,
not hundreds of them), but have built up an absurd
backlog. I will do it, even if I have to take a week off
work, and it will be a pleasure.
At the beginning of the campaign I said two
things. The first was that no contribution is too
small. We turn our nose up at nothing. The second
was that there would be no hard sell. As it turned
out, there was no need for one. You all rose to the
occasion with hardly any spark to light the fuse.
You will forgive me if I briefly channel Young Mr
Grace: You've all done very well.
