O

ur annual weekend reunion took place

recently at Chester. Around 60 Bridge Club

Live members invaded the city to play a lot

of bridge! We were also treated to two excellent

seminars by two of our top players, Ed Scerri and

Mike Elliot. An early Sunday morning cruise on a

chartered boat on the River Dee included some

bridge in the style of our main Drop-In Drop-Out

(DIDO) room online.

A few days earlier I played the North hand below

in our main room. As dealer, with East-West

vulnerable, I opened 1NT and was left to play there.

I somehow managed four tricks for 69%. But

another line on the traveller caught my eye.

So West ran the ®J and then the ™J. The latter was

covered by the ™Q and taken with the ™K. West

cashed four more clubs and three more hearts. As

the last heart was led from hand, this was the

position:

London's Mike Tucker was West. North had

opened 1NT and his partner had doubled. After the

opponents had scrambled to 2t, Mike decided he

had heard enough and just bid 3NT.

North led the t5 and West took the tJ with the

tA. North's 1NT opening suggested that North had

all the outstanding picture cards and especially the

queens of hearts and clubs.

North was squeezed and West made all 13 tricks

for 94% on the board. Poor old North, it's not every

day you open 1NT and make no tricks at all!
