Layout 5 ´ Q J 7 4
´ K 3
South, playing in 3NT, leads the ´Q from the
dummy. Do you cover with the ´K? Why (or why
Answer: Yes, cover with the king. With only ´K-x
you have to take the opportunity while you can of
taking out two honours for one. If you don't cover
the ´Q, you may have to play your ´K on the ´4 on
the next round. No red-blooded bridge player likes
to play his honours 'on air'.
And finally . . .

´ K 9
South opens 3´ and plays in 4´. Dummy wins the
opening lead and South calls for the ´Q. Do you
cover with the ´K? Why (or why not)?
Answer: Certainly not! Play the ´9 smoothly and
quickly. Covering with the ´K is felo de se. South has
seven spades and is trying to hustle you into an
injudicious, revealing cover. As West has no spades
there can be nothing to promote, and promotion of
lower cards is the key to covering honours. How
could you promote a void?
You must play low with an innocent air and watch
as declarer attempts to drop West's singleton ´K.
