JBA Consulting
The project, over 8 years, included a number of stages: management of survey contracts; hydrological
analysis and flood modelling; risk assessment and options development; strategic environmental
assessment; climate change assessment; and production of the flood risk management plan and
consultation.
Challenge
We were commissioned to develop flood hazard and risk maps and the flood risk management
plan for the Western River Basin District, for the first cycle of the Floods Directive.
Western Catchment Flood Risk Assessment and Management Plan (Western
CFRAM), Ireland
Location: Ireland Client: Office of Public Works
Solution
To deliver this project we managed large scale river survey contracts, we undertook hydrological
assessment of gauges, we regionalised estimates of flood flows, we assessed flood risk through
detailed 1D/2D hydraulic models and we prepared detailed flood mapping including flood extent,
probability and its consequences.
This led to the development and appraisal of options to manage the flood risk, including both structural
and non-structural measures. Throughout the project a number of consultation events were held and
driven by our team.

Benefit
The resulting flood risk management plans have enabled the Irish Government to prioritise and
progress the development of flood relief schemes and minor works schemes in the west of Ireland.
