The RSPCA's Community Animal Welfare Footprint
(CAWF) award scheme celebrates and promotes good
practice. Now entering its seventh year, the CAWF awards
continue to be the only scheme that recognises the
commitment and achievement of local authorities, housing
providers and local resilience forums in England and Wales
in improving animal welfare. This guide to good practice
explains what has been learned and highlights the key
principles that will ensure good animal welfare in
emergency planning.
Local resilience forums (LRFs) and individual local authorities earn
bronze, silver then gold footprints when they clearly consider
animals in their emergency planning process. This booklet provides
guidance on what makes a good contingency planning policy and
highlights some practical examples, demonstrated by our Footprint
achievers, of the importance of considering animals such as pets
and livestock in emergency planning.
The RSPCA hopes that this guide will inspire other LRFs and local
authorities to review and improve their current policies and
practices. We also hope that, after following the guidance in this
booklet, local authorities and LRFs will be encouraged to promote
their good work and to seek recognition through the CAWF scheme.
