I am delighted to welcome you back to King’s College from all corners of the world. For
some of you this will be your first visit for many years. You will find that the spirit of the
school remains unchanged and many of the buildings and rooms much as you remember
them, possibly with a few modern embellishments. The Woodard Room has new stained
glass windows and a mezzanine floor, but is still used for exams and societies as it was in the
1970s. The Chapel is larger and possibly more colourful, but its importance to our lives is
unchanged.
What may be new to you is the Philip Richards Building, which houses our library, IT suites,
Careers Department and Business Education Faculty. We are hugely grateful to Philip
Richards (Carpenter 1977) for a gift which has had a profound and positive impact on life and learning at King’s.
You will find the school in good heart, with a roll of over 450 boys and girls. We remain a majority boarding
school. The boarding houses now are Bishop Fox, King Alfred, Woodard and Tuckwell for boys and Carpenter,
Taylor and Meynell for girls. Good exam results at GCSE and A Level, combined with sporting excellence,
particularly in cricket, as well as success in the performing arts and outdoor pursuits have kept us at the forefront
of UK education. Our pupils enjoy an extraordinarily rich and inspirational experience at King’s and, just like you,
they go on to achieve great things when they leave.
It is an honour and a privilege to lead this school. This is still a very special place,
with a uniquely friendly, happy, busy atmosphere. I look forward to meeting you
this weekend and hearing about your memories of King’s. I hope you are excited
by what you see.
