Into view
A leap onwards from before. The brushstrokes are helping the
modelling of the face. I wanted him to be monumental, made out
of the elements he fought through; at this point he really looks like
he's been carved from ice. The marks are purposely vigorous, a
few brushes got blunted on the hard bumpy surface. The texture
and marks are the same for the hair, nose and jumper. I noticed
at this point the ears were tiny (they are really small in the pastel
sketch). Certain distortions always seem to crop up, my usual
faults are making noses longer and bigger (like my own) and
making ears too small. Ears get bigger as you get older, so maybe
I'm trying to make my subjects younger?
The work could go one of two ways; either it would become a bad
copy of an old photo, or it would become more, be imbued with a
spirit of the man, not just a facsimile of his features.
