Welcoming an International
Arrival
Best Practice Guide
1.Extend a warm welcome to your new employee and reaffirm that
the Trust is doing everything in its power to ensure their success
and happiness here.
2.Assign a buddy - Peer support from previously recruited overseas
nurses is an excellent approach to supporting existing cohorts for
OSCE preparation, orientation and integration. This approach will
have significant benefits in reducing anxieties and allaying fears.
3.Working with the PDN's in the Nursing Education team and Head
of Resourcing to offer robust onboarding, induction, and pastoral
care with support.
4.Local induction on the ward and introduction to the team
5.Supporting integration with the hospital and local community area
- Helping your overseas nurses with navigating around the
hospital site(s) and local community is a good way of familiarising
them with their surroundings.
6.Support the preceptorship programme facilitated by the Nursing
Education Team and, where possible, provide a dedicated mentor.
7.Attend International Nurses Tea Party (during the OSCE
programme)
8.Identify and talk through opportunities for training and
development.
