The concept of vicarious post traumatic growth was unfamiliar to
participants but there was a strong emphasis from practitioners on the
positive influence of success stories of service users both on future
practice and professional growth.
Conclusions and Recommendations
This study highlighted how vicarious trauma is a fact of practice when working
with traumatised individuals. Participants in this study reflected the need for
training in this area and that the organisation needs to develop a framework of
understanding around vicarious trauma. Supervision practice needs to be
reviewed and enhanced so the discussion of impact becomes a formal part of
this process. Alternative means of support should also be considered that are
external to the organisation. Practitioners need to be supported to understand
the importance of self-care to help maintain them in the workplace.
