It is stating the obvious but everyone will experience different post-operative recoveries and so the information here is a basic and general guide. You should neither be too far ahead or behind the approximate indicators given and, if you are, you should discuss with your health professional.
The red line on the graph to the left represents what recovery is not, that is, a linear, straight line of constant improvement until you are better. Instead, you will have good and bad days but over time you will see a gradual improvement (the green line). Everyone's line will be different. Be patient and continue with simple exercises and daily activities.
Early Phase - 0 to 6 weeks - Exercise Plan
Full weight bearing with 2 crutches or zimmer frame.
Basic Home Exercises.
Care with activities of daily living and personal care.
When able, progress from 2 crutches to 1 crutch and from there to normal walking.
Intermediate Phase - 6 weeks to 3 months - Exercise Plan
Return to office based work.
Build up walking distances.
Return to driving when feel safe & confident to do so.
Swimming pool - aqua aerobics or front crawl. Avoid breaststroke.
Gym activities like static bike, treadmill, pilates.
Late Phase - 3 to 6 months - Exercise Plan
Return to high activity/manual labour jobs 3 months.
Outdoor activities e.g. cycling, hiking, golf.
All pool/gym activities but continue to avoid deep flexion positions.
