During the course of their duties investigating
complaints of cruelty to animals, RSPCA
inspectors encounter many difficult and
unpleasant circumstances.
For example, elderly and vulnerable persons
might be found living in poverty and squalor
with no one to provide help. Inspectors who
become aware of such situations will refer
cases to Social Services or another agency
in the hope that the person can receive the
assistance and support they need.
Sometimes, inspectors will perceive that there
is some element of child protection risk and
this will result in a referral to the NSPCC
Helpline in order to alert the relevant authority.
The work of the RSPCA is not just about
protecting the welfare of animals; we must
also consider the welfare of people in the
work that we do.
