The Covid-19 pandemic meant big changes to the way we worked and lived our lives, and the
apprentices were feeling the same impact. The Apprenticeships continued to be delivered in the new
virtual world of working with digital learning or with social distancing measures.
Many of you will know, that work-based learning programmes include an 'on the job' and 'off the job'
element. The 'on the job' learning had to be fulfilled with reduced access to the physical workplace and
less face-to-face time with the mentor or work-place supervisor/leader.
We needed to find different and innovative ways of supporting each apprentice in this new world. Now
more than ever, there needed to be more interaction, coaching, and support for our apprentices. We
needed to help them build resilience to cope with the challenges they face, and also needed to
consider the flexibility they may need to fulfil their work commitments and re-think our traditional
teaching methods to accommodate this.
CooperVision have manged to keep all apprenticeships going during last year and offer all the support
apprentices need to be able to continue on with their training. This is massive achievement and we
were able to do it as our apprentices were flexible and ready to adapt as well as remain dedicated and
motivated.
