Q
Q. What habits and strategies are positively
contributing to your current work-life balance?
A. Being an engineer, I like to have a consistent
routine when it comes to work - a process that
I know I can rely on to get things done during
my time at work. Outside of work, I enjoy the
spontaneity that life throws at us. There is a certain
level of bliss I get from the consistency of routine
at work combined with life's adventures that have a
positive impact on my current work-life balance.
Q. What was the biggest driver or priority that
inspired you to make a change in your life?
A. It was during the COVID-19 pandemic when
I really started to see the imbalance of work and
life can have on my life. With everything being
shut down, I was given more time to think about
work while not being able to see friends and family.
Although I love what I do for a career, thinking about
work more often made me feel less connected to the
relationships I have built with family and friends.
Q. What was contributing to your previouslyimbalanced routine?
A. In the past, I would frequently visit work-related
items while away from the office and on personal
time. Whether it was checking my email, responding
to phone calls, or completing work while on PTO/
vacation, I would feel the urge to at check in to
make sure I was not missing any key decisions being
made or any meetings. The absence of trust with my
peers was a big reason for me to constantly complete
work-related duties on my personal time.
Q: What are the key characteristics of your new
routine?
A. The key characteristic of my new routine is the
empowerment and trust I have with my colleagues
due to my confidence in their ability to make
decisions and proceed with next steps when I am
not available.
Q. How do you hope to use your extra time after
having found this balance?
A. I hope to create stronger bonds with friends and
family by intentionally scheduling more quality time
with them. Whether it is a simple activity like a walk
in the park, or something more exploratory, I hope
to create more memories with the people I love and
care for.
Q: How does it feel to have work-life balance
according to your design?
A: It feels great to not have to prioritize work or
life at the other's expense. It brings me joy and
happiness waking up to knowing that I have the
support of both my colleagues, friends and family
when in need.
Q: What is one goal that you want to continue to
work on re: work-life balance?
A: I would like to work on the linear focus I have
when it comes to growing at work or in life. I tend
to have 'tunnel vision' when it comes to achieving a
goal whether it be for work or life. I want to work on
continuing to grow in both areas without having to
sacrifice growing in either one.
Q: Capture the essence of your work-life balance in
one sentence!
A: Work-life balance to me means creating
meaningful bonds and memories both at work and
outside of work! JORDAN TOLSON
