THE WORLD WE'RE TRYING
TO CHANGE
The May discovery of 215 children's remains at the site of a former residential school in Kamloops has
thrown a spotlight on Canada.
Over a span of only a few months, more than 1,300 unmarked graves have been discovered at the sites of
four former residential schools across Canada - a fraction of the more than 130 schools once funded by the
federal government. The latest grim discoveries follow other similar findings in British Columbia as well as
in the province of Saskatchewan.
On September 29th, on the eve of the new national day of commemoration on September 30th, the
Government of Canada held an event on Parliament Hill to mark the first National Day for Truth and
Reconciliation. This event will honor the lost Indigenous children, residential school survivors, and all the
lives and communities affected by the Native Indian residential school system in Canada. Commemoration
of the painful history and ongoing impact of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation
process.
At Capri, we recognize the tremendous amount of grief and loss this has caused. These findings only deepen
the pain of those involved - families, survivors, and all Indigenous peoples and communities.
