Whilst the departments of Isere and Haute Alpes
do not host as many well-known ski resorts as
their more northerly neighbours, they do still have
extremely popular and active property markets.
Both can offer wonderful skiing and other winter
sports, as well as being year round destinations
in their own right. Property prices are generally
lower and it is this excellent value for money that
attracts so many domestic and overseas buyers.
Many resorts are also investing in their
infrastructure and becoming more
environmentally friendly. In Serre-Chevalier,
the renewable energy project is going strong
and energy production from solar panels, wind
turbines and hydro-electricity provides around
30% of the resort's energy.
Jackson Collins is the Leggett agent in
Serre-Chevalier and he has seen this green
transformation. He also welcomes the new
custom digital ski pass which gives priority for
the lifts, along with a bespoke app and special
terminals throughout the ski area. Jackson has
also seen some definite changes in what buyers
are looking for:
"Here in the southern Alps demand is strong in
the resorts and town centres but we have also
seen a strong trend towards lakeside property,
with the appeal being a year round experience
rather than just winter ski. Stand-alone property
is clearly attractive, as the need for outside space
to accommodate the extended family is a factor.
More buyers are looking at joint purchases with
other family members. Property located slightly
outside ski resorts is now more interesting to
French buyers, as a 20 minute drive is not seen
as a drawback and value for money, in what
were previously seen as secondary areas, is
exceptional.
Sales in this area remain an even split between
the domestic and international markets. The bulk
of stand-alone property has either been sold or is
overpriced."
Many resorts now offer digital
ski passes, bespoke apps and
real time information on hi-vis
screens.
