BRENTWOOD TENNIS CLUB
1883 Formed as a section of Brentwood Cricket Club.
1885 Became a separate Club
1888 Re-joined the Cricket Club as a sub-section
1904 Expanded from three to four grass courts
1910 Hosted the Mid-Essex Invitation Tennis Tournament until 1931
1916- 1919 Tennis section in limbo during World War I
1920 Tennis revived with five courts and play permitted on Sundays.
1933 Erection of a tennis pavilion. Club became affiliated to ECLTA
1934 -1940 Records lost
1936 First record of the Club's Men's Singles Championship-won by m.f.hignett.
1949 First post-war Men's Singles Championship - won by n.essex.
1955 Brentwood County Ground Club formed with tennis no longer part of the
Cricket Club but as Brentwood Tennis Club.
1958 The new County Ground Pavilion built. Tennis Club build one hard court.
1960 Trophy purchased for Club's Ladies Singles Championship. The event had
been staged before but the earliest record is 1955 - W. Ketterer.
1963 Ladies provided with a shower by the County Ground Club
1966 Two En tout Cas shale courts built. Peter Thompson engaged as Coach.
1967 Men's team entered in Essex League and win promotion in first season.
1968 Ladies team entered in Essex League coming third but equal on points with
the two teams above them. Club holds first Dinner/Dance.
1970 Ladies win Essex Junior Cup
1971 Ladies win Essex Intermediate Cup and Division II with 100% record.
1972 Ladies are beaten finalists in Essex Senior Cup.
1973 Junior Section formed. Two further En tout Cas shale courts built. Men's
team won Essex Junior Cup.
