Rectangular Coordinate System (I) 8.39
A point E is translated 6 units upwards to F and then
translated 9 units to the left to G(-6 , 3). Find the
coordinates of E.
Let (x , y) be the coordinates of E, then
coordinates of F = (x , y + 6)
coordinates of G = (x - 9 , y + 6)
` x - 9 = -6
x = 3
y + 6 = 3
y = -3
` The coordinates of E are (3 , -3).

The following example shows that the vertices of a triangle are translated
in the same way and a new triangle can be drawn.
The figure shows 3ABC with vertices A(5 , -1), B(5 , -4)
and C(2 , -1). A, B and C are translated upwards by
4 units to Al, Bl and Cl respectively.
(a) Find the coordinates of Al, Bl and Cl.
(b) Draw 3AlBlCl in the figure.
