Listening skill 1
Identifying vowel sounds ᗆйʩࠪ
There are different types of vowel sounds:
1 Short vowels, e.g. bad, sit
2 Long vowels, e.g. teacher, room
3 Other vowels, e.g. first, toy
Some words have similar vowel sounds. To get the correct keyword,
pay attention to the differences between different vowel sounds,
e.g. game and gum.
Example (Listening 1, Practice point, Question 3)
Annie: In my picture, my sister and I are playing in a park.
3 Which word can you hear?
A park
B peak
C pick
D pork
1 Read the question. We need to listen for a keyword in one or
more than one sentence.
2 Read the four options. They are four words with the same
consonants and different vowels.
3 Underline the vowels. Listen carefully for the correct word.
(Answer: A)
Sometimes we can hear all options in the recording. We need to read the
question carefully to get the correct answer, e.g.
Lisa: Ray, look at this photo. This is my brother Roy.
( Ray / Roy ) is Lisa's brother.
