Part 1: Read aloud
Speaking skill 1 Linking sounds of words in a sentence
When saying a sentence, we can link some words together.
1 consonant sound + vowel sound
e.g. The tigers are looking for food.
2 same consonant sound
e.g. They want to go shopping.
3 In some cases, we can add a 'w' sound between two vowel sounds.
e.g. Let's go out to find the children. ('o' + 'o')
A Listen to the recording and pay attention to the linking sounds. Then
repeat after it.
1 Last night, my parents took me to watch a film called
Mad Dog.
2 It is more polite to knock before you go in.
B Listen to the recording and add to link the words. Then repeat after it.
1 The heavy rain dropped on the roof and made some loud noise.
2 Please go over your homework before you hand it in.
3 Jenny had a bad day today. She cried sadly.
C Add to link the words in the following text and read it aloud. Then listen
to the demonstration.
At Jack Johnson's concert
Jack Johnson is my favourite singer. He has a beautiful
voice and is very talented. I went to his concert last Friday.
Jack wrote a lot of wonderful songs. When the music of his latest work 'Too Often I
Cry' was on, everyone stood up and sang along with him.
Jack closed the concert with another new song 'Good Day, Good Night'. It was a lovely
song. I kept humming it on my way home!
We do not link the words
in two separate clauses
or sentences.
