Applied Suicide Intervention Skills
(ASIST) Workshop
2 Thursday & Friday: 12-13 May 9:15am - 4:30pm North Down Community Network Alan & Fiona
ASIST is a two-day interactive workshop in suicide first-aid. ASIST teaches students to recognize when someone may be at risk of suicide and work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate
safety. Although ASIST is widely used by healthcare providers, students don't need any formal training to attend the workshop - ASIST can be learned and used by anyone.
Goal Setting for Recovery
1 Thursday: 12 May 10:30am - 12:30pm Downshire Hospital, Training Room 2 Alan & Bank or James
Setting clear, achievable and realistic goals can be both motivating and can help us move forward in our recovery. This course aims to explore the different ways to set goals and the benefits of
goal-setting as a positive strategy for recovery. The course also aims to encourage you to consider what goals you would like to achieve and how you can begin to plan your next steps.
Living Life to the Full

We can all sometimes feel down or fed up, stressed or worried, or that we aren't good enough. However, there are things you can do to make positive changes in each of these areas. Making positive changes
involves rediscovering the things you already do that are good for you - and how to build these in your life. In this course, we'll explore skills that can make a real difference to any of our lives. There are no
quick fixes, and to really get good at using these skills will take practice.

Suicide Alertness for Everyone

Suicide is preventable and anyone can make a difference. This workshop prepares students to be alert to the possibility of suicide; they will learn four basic steps to create a life-saving connection. These skills
are widely used by both professionals and the general public.
Assertiveness Skills

Assertiveness is a communication style. It is being able to express your feelings, thoughts, beliefs and opinions in an open manner that doesn't violate the rights of others. Assertive behaviour is a life skill
which assists us in being able to say no when it is necessary to do so, to deal with criticism, and to stand up for ourselves and our rights. Students will have the opportunity to develop the ability to use
assertive techniques and have the opportunity to practice.
Exploring Self-Compassion

Self-compassion involves being aware of our own pain and suffering, and understanding that this is a hard, but normal human experience. Directing feelings of kindness and care towards ourselves, and
focusing our attention and energy on how we might alleviate our pain, are also crucial components of self-compassion. During this course, we will explore and practice number strategies to be more selfcompassionate.
Think Family: Involving Children in
Conversations about Mental Health

Discussing a mental health illness with children can help them make sense of changes they notice in you and your family as well as reducing stigma associated with mental health. This course aims to
encourage parents and staff to consider how they can prepare to talk to children about mental health. Talking with children will help them understand and feel empowered about mental health. This course
will explore the benefits of talking to children about mental health, using a family focused approach and to explore some practical tips for parents and staff when discussing mental health with children
