BLACK
AUGUST
Black August is an annual commemoration
and prison-based holiday to remember Black
freedom fights and political prisoners and
to highlight Black resistance against racial
oppression. It takes place during the entire
calendar month of August.
Black August was initiated by the Black
Guerilla Family in San Quentin State Prison
in 1979 when a group of incarcerated people
came together to commemorate the deaths
of brothers Jonathan P. Jackson and George
Jackson (considered one of the most
outspoken voices on racism in the criminal
justice system at the time) at San Quentin
State Prison.
For many fighting the ravages of the prison
industrial complex, George Jackson is a source
of inspiration and discipline. Over forty years
ago, George Jackson pleaded "Settle your
quarrels, come together, understand the reality
of our situation, understand that fascism is
already here, that people are dying who could
be saved, that generations more will die or live
poor butchered half-lives if you fail to act. Do
what must be done, discover your humanity
and your love of Revolution. Pass on the torch.
Join us, give your life for the people."

SWITZERLAND NATIONAL
DAY
Although not recognized as an official holiday
until 1994, Swiss National Day has been
celebrated on August 1st since 1891. This
occasion marks the anniversary of the founding
of the Swiss Confederation in 1291. Special
celebratory events include a reenactment of
the signing of the 1291 Rütlischur alliance at
Rütli Meadow as well as the illumination of the
25-meter-high Rhine Falls in Schaffhausen.
During the day, families and close friends
gather to spend time with one another; and
at night children light paper lanterns in the
streets, shoot small fireworks, and relax near
large bonfires with their loved ones. This
holiday allows those with connections to
Switzerland to appreciate the country's long
and rich history and fosters a feeling of family
and comradery among Swiss citizens.
